Hosts, Fort Kochi, Sithara Homestay

Harry John Bernard and Mary John Bernard are a retired couple, who have lived their entire lives in Fort Kochi. A lively and fun-loving couple, they started Sithara Homestay in 1999. Over the years, Sithara Homestay has won the hearts of hundreds of guests and been awarded various accolades and awards. 


Harry is a remarkable host and has exceptional knowledge of the various attractions and sights in and around Fort Kochi and other parts of Kerala. With his immense grasp of the tourist spots in Kerala, he also arranges for unique experiences like houseboat stays and tickets for tourist sites and cultural performances.  


Mary is an outstanding cook and her sumptuous food keep the guests asking for more! 


Together, they welcome you to their home and assure an enthralling experience to guests.


Sithara Homestay, located on a street close to some of the major landmarks and walking distance from the beach, is an ideal place to start your discovery of Fort Kochi.


Fort Kochi is a charming neighborhood, tucked between the Arabian Sea & the backwaters. Tourists swarm Fort Kochi to experience the unique blend of extraordinary history and stupendous beaches. Adjacent to Fort Kochi, is the locality of Mattancherry, the centrepoint of historic Cochin. 

 

During a wander through the narrow lanes of Fort Kochi, you will stumble upon spice markets, Chinese Fishing Nets, the Jewish Synagogue, the Dutch Palace, the Vasco Da Gama Church (India's first European church) and homes built with Dutch architecture.

You may want to try some of these unique experiences during your stay at our homestay:

 

  • Walk to the Fort Kochi Beach and watch the mesmerizing sunset.
  • Take a short walk to the Chinese Fishing Nets and if you are upto it, try your hand at fishing with the local fishermen
  • Cycle through the lanes and streets of Fort Kochi and embrace the unique collage of Anglo-Indian, Portuguese, Dutch, English and Jewish architectures. 
  • Explore the various churches in the locality including the Santa Cruz Basilica, the Vasco Da Gama Church and other historically significant churches in Mattanchery
  • Visit the Jew Town and the Jewish Synagogue and be amazed at the ethnic diversity within the small town of Fort Kochi
  • Drive down to Dutch Palace and other sites of historical importance in and around Fort Kochi  
  • Take a ferry to the bustling city of Ernakulam to enjoy to some great shopping experience - and if you are lucky, you may get to see some dolphins on the way!
  • Watch the toddy-tappers at work (maybe try out the toddy)
  • Visit the nearby coir making facility at the village
  • Learn about crab farming and prawns farming  
  • Visit the 350 year old Nalukettu house (ancient home built in Keralite architectural style) where a traditional Kerala Hindu family resides and visit the kavu (sacred grove) with its snake god
  • Savour traditional Keralite and Fort Kochi cuisine and may be learn some of your personal favourites by attending Keralite Cuisine Cookery Classes 
  • Spend  a night on a Kerala luxury House Boat on the tranquil backwaters
